Caught Somewhere in Time
As a teenage drummer growing in the 80's, Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind was the aerobics preparation for ANY rock drumming. And yes, this was not the same drummer from The Number of the Beast... there was some finesse along with the power, anger, and technique that young Metal drummers were yet to explore.
But do you want to know about the apex of bass drum hyperactivity? It's Maiden's Somewhere in Time album. Nicko McBrain brought it to the next level. Of course, I had to learn and emulate EVERY SINGLE NOTE of EVERY SINGLE SONG. I had a Ludwig Speed King, and some of my friends used to watch me playing from behind the drums- it was that entertaining the "hummingbird wing effect", knowing that there is movement, but you cannot quite see where's the pedal beater, the pedal board, the foot. Learning Nicko's drumming gave my generation superpowers.
